Tampa, FL — April is Adrenal Disease Awareness Month and the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, a part of HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital, is raising awareness about the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases. With increased awareness, our community will become more knowledgeable about when to consult their physician regarding testing and treatment.

Located on top of both kidneys, adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands. They produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions. When adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones, this can lead to adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease). Adrenal glands may also develop nodules (or tumors) that can be benign or malignant, which can potentially produce excessive amounts of certain hormones leading to a variety of health issues. That’s why it’s important to be aware of potential adrenal issues and have them checked out by an experienced medical professional.

Dr. Nada Alsaigh, a recent adrenal surgery patient, traveled from Connecticut after an incidental finding on a CT scan revealed she had a benign adrenal tumor. “I searched for the best adrenal surgeon and found Dr. Tobias Carling at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery,” stated Dr. Alsaigh. “When I was searching for the best, I considered their training and experience, as well as the volume of surgery performed by the surgeon because there are many surgeons who perform adrenal surgery, but not the volume of surgery performed by Dr. Carling. He is an exceptional, highly-skilled adrenal surgeon who is kind and caring. I believe I came to the best in the world for my surgery.”

Adrenal Disease Awareness Month is important because increased awareness emphasizes the vital purpose of the adrenal glands and encourages the general public to seek treatment if a disorder is suspected. “We surely need an
Adrenal Awareness Month because there is a significant lack of understanding about the disease, types of adrenal tumors, and their treatment”, states Tobias Carling, MD, PhD, adrenal surgeon at The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, a part of HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital. “If you experience symptoms such as high blood pressure, racing heartbeat, headaches, tremors, and anxiety, this is the perfect time to seek the advice of your physician.”

The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery is emphasizing the importance this month of understanding the various types of adrenal disease and consulting with the most skilled and experienced medical professionals to determine the best course of treatment.
