Calvin's Story

“He loved the nurses and therapists, especially Kaitlin and Beth. They were instrumental in his recovery. They worked him hard and he needed every minute of it.”

Calvin Engelhardt

After a long drive back from Georgia on a typical Friday evening, Calvin Englehardt quickly fell asleep in his favorite chair. When he woke at 3:00am to head to bed, he felt dizzy and laid down for a moment. He soon realized he was unable to swallow and his face began to droop. He woke his wife Vickie and she called 9-1-1.

First responders recognized that Calvin was suffering from a stroke and brought him to Orange Park Hospital where he received tPA, a medication to breakdown blood clots that cause a stroke. After six days in the hospital, Calvin moved to the Orange Park Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Center for his recovery. When arriving, he needed assistance standing, walking and performing simple daily tasks such as getting dressed.

Calvin’s Wife Vickie says Calvin’s stay was great. “He loved the nurses and therapists, especially Kaitlin and Beth. They were instrumental in his recovery. They worked him hard and he needed every minute of it.”

Calvin hopes to one day return to work and live a completely independent life. When leaving rehab, Calvin required minimal assistance getting dressed and was able to walk independently with his walker. Although he hopes to never need rehab again, he says he would choose Orange Park Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center over any other.
