Hernia repair
The Hernia Center at HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital specializes in the repair of a variety of hernias. Our surgeons' extensive experience provides you with advanced surgical techniques, allowing you to return to normal activities as soon as possible.
Types of hernias we treat
We treat different types of hernias, including:
- Epigastric hernia: Occurs in between the navel and chest
- Femoral hernia: Occurs in the low groin and is more common in women
- Hiatal hernias: Occurs in the diaphragm, the large muscle separating the chest cavity and the abdomen
- Incisional (surgical) hernia: Occurs near scar tissue from a previous abdominal surgery
- Inguinal hernia: The most common type of hernia, which occurs in the groin area
- Umbilical hernia: Often occurs through the navel
- Ventral hernias: Less common than inguinal hernias and occurs in the epigastrium, or upper abdomen
Our hernia treatments
Our surgeons use advanced surgical technology, such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery, to perform hernia procedures. Some of the procedures we use to treat hernias include:
- Abdominal wall reconstruction: This procedure is for large and complicated hernias or for patients with reoccurring hernias resulting in excessive scar tissue and mesh material. Our surgeons use advanced techniques and prosthetic materials to rebuild the muscles of the abdominal wall.
- Inguinal and femoral hernia repair: This procedure involves the surgeon using mesh to repair the hernia.
- Ventral hernia repair: In this procedure, the surgeon uses mesh to improve the contour of the abdominal wall.
Preparing for your surgery
When getting ready to undergo a surgical procedure, it's important to follow all of your doctor's instructions.
Before your surgery
Before your surgery, your doctor or nurse will:
- Give you specific instructions preparing for your procedure
- Inform you of any medications you should or should not take
- Inform you of pre-surgery tests that must be completed before your procedure
- Provide the specified time before your surgery to stop eating or drinking
It is very important to follow all of these instructions. If you fail to follow your preoperative instructions, it may be necessary to postpone your surgery.
If you are unable to keep your appointment for surgery, notify both your doctor and the hospital as soon as possible. You may call our Surgery Scheduling Department at (727) 341-7666.
Pre-surgery testing
Most types of surgery require pre-surgery testing. These tests should be completed at least three days before your procedure. Pre-surgery testing takes place at our Outpatient Diagnostic Center located at 1609 Pasadena Ave. S., Suite 1B (across the street from the hospital).
If you are unable to keep your appointment, notify both your doctor and the hospital as soon as possible. You may call our scheduling department at (727) 341-7666.
Your surgery day
On the day of your surgery, report to Admitting, located in the front lobby of the hospital. You may park in the parking lot in front of the hospital.
When you come to the hospital, follow these guidelines:
- Arrange for someone to pick you up after surgery. Due to the effects of anesthesia, you will be unable to drive yourself home.
- Bring appropriate storage for personal items, such as dentures, contact lenses, hearing aids and prostheses. We will label these items and keep them in a safe place during your procedure.
- Leave all jewelry, money and other valuables at home or with your family.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
When you arrive, you can expect the following:
- A nurse will record your vital signs and other required health information.
- You will be asked to sign a surgery consent form, and your anesthesiologist and surgeon will visit you.
- A family member or friend can be with you in the pre-surgical area.
- When you are taken to the operating room, your loved ones are welcome to wait in our waiting room.
After your surgery
After your procedure:
- You can rest and recover in the surgical recovery area until your medical team determines you are able to go home.
- The length of your stay depends on the type of surgery.
- You will be given specific instructions on how to care for yourself at home and who to contact if you have problems.
