Poinciana resident Narda Handler always considered herself healthy and active for her age. She enjoyed walking, visiting her local gym and even taking Zumba classes. So, when she found herself with chest pain and shortness of breath, Narda knew something wasn't right.

After arriving at Poinciana Hospital, she was admitted immediately and diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolisms — a potentially life–threatening condition. She spent the next three days in the ICU. “The doctors told me a blood clot had traveled up my leg and was blocking blood flow to my lungs. Thankfully, I was in tune with my body and went to the hospital when I did. I hate to imagine what would have happened if I had ignored my symptoms.”

Because of her swift action, Narda's condition didn't require surgery. Her medical team was able to identify how the blood clot formed and prescribe medicines to dissolve it. “Throughout my almost week-long hospital stay, the doctors and nurses were always friendly, attentive and professional. It was a scary time, but I took comfort in their kindness and expert care. I knew I was in good hands.”

Today, Narda reports she's recovering well. She's also worked with her doctors to identify lifestyle and medication changes to avoid future blood clots. “The team at Poinciana Hospital didn't just treat me — they empowered me with a better understanding of my overall health. And, most importantly, they educated me on how to protect it.”
