About HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital Preadmission Services

What is preadmission testing?

Preadmission testing, or presurgical testing, is a series of tests and consultations that are performed by specialized nurses and staff to make sure you are prepared for your scheduled procedure. It includes time for you to ask questions and get answers, so you feel as comfortable as possible with your surgery. Our goal is to help make sure you are physically, mentally and emotionally ready.

When do I need preadmission testing?

Preadmission testing is only needed before a surgical procedure that will involve some form of anesthesia. People of all ages undergo specific examinations and tests before surgery to make sure they are healthy and ready for the procedure.

Preadmission testing is usually scheduled within the month before your operation to make sure all your information is up-to-date and all your questions are answered. Your surgical team will help you schedule your appointment with us.

What does presurgical testing involve?

Depending on what sort of procedure you're having, you will have different medical and testing needs. This is normal, since every patient is unique, and your specific circumstances will determine the tests your doctors and surgeons will require. However, generally speaking, you will probably receive one or more of the following:

  • Blood work and analysis
  • Chest X-ray
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Physical examination
  • Urinalysis (providing a urine sample for testing)

You will also be asked important health questions about your age, current health conditions and overall medical history. This is to ensure you are given the best care possible by your healthcare team.

In addition to providing important testing services, our staff is there to help you feel more calm and confident as you prepare for your procedure. We're happy to answer questions, address concerns and do whatever we can to help. We understand how stressful any sort of procedure can be, and we want you to be as comfortable as possible with the process.

What do I bring to preadmission testing?

When coming to your preadmission testing appointment, please have the following information on hand to make sure our records are correct:

  • Social Security number (SSN)
  • Name of your ordering physician
  • Date of your scheduled procedure
  • All insurance information

How long does presurgical testing take?

The whole preadmission testing process typically takes no more than three hours. We know you're probably busy with other life events and plans, so our office is particularly committed to making sure your experience is quick and easy.
