In recognition of Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August, HCA Florida Osceola Hospital salutes Lisa Maize, an internationally board-certified lactation consultant who has been a labor and delivery nurse for 22 years and has served for 10 years as a lactation specialist, helping women achieve their breastfeeding goals.

Lisa’s support of mothers and babies is deeply rooted in her passion for caring for women as they progress through pregnancy, childbirth, and nurturing. “I love pregnancy and teaching moms how to care for their babies,” she shares. “It’s a wonderful time in a woman’s life.”

Her philosophy is centered around the awe-inspiring capabilities of a woman’s body and the beauty of the birthing process. “A woman’s body is so amazing that they can grow this baby, give birth, and then nourish it afterwards. After 22 years, it’s still amazing,” she reflects. “A birth brings tears to my eyes every time. It’s a miracle.”

Lisa approaches each interaction with empathy, patience, and a deep understanding of the challenges new mothers face. “Moms are exhausted after delivering. The first 24 hours, the baby is very sleepy, and it can be tough to wake them up. Once the baby awakens, he or she cluster feeds every 30 minutes, every hour, and moms often worry if their baby is getting enough,” she explains. “I educate them from the baby’s perspective. It’s not always about the baby’s hunger; sometimes, they breastfeed for comfort and to feel safe, and mom is the only one who can provide that.”

Recognizing the individuality of each mother’s journey, Lisa listens closely to her patients, attuning herself to their tone, body language, and concerns. “My main focus is on the mom and what she feels capable of doing,” she adds. “I talk to the mom and listen to what her goals are, and do my best to help them meet those goals—whether it’s breastfeeding for a period of time or until they go back to work. It’s about helping them enjoy and nourish their baby.”

Understanding that breastfeeding can be demanding, stressful and sometimes not possible, Lisa offers alternatives when needed. “We have to listen, provide evidence-based information, and let them make the choice,” she emphasizes.

Ultimately, Lisa’s approach is about empowering mothers to make informed decisions without judgment. “Breastfeeding is best, but it’s not about making someone feel guilty if they cannot, or choose not to do that,” she concludes.

With her extensive experience and compassionate approach, Lisa Maize continues to be a trusted guide for mothers at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, helping them navigate the complexities of breastfeeding and early motherhood with confidence and support.
