Lura Carter’s baby, Cruz Calhoun Smith, is truly a miracle and she credits the team at Capital Hospital for taking care of her during a time that was filled with uncertainty. “I had 11 miscarriages before having my son. He was my 12th pregnancy and my miracle rainbow baby born via C-section at the Family Center.

With my history of infertility and miscarriages, my pregnancy was high risk. From the day I was admitted to the Family Center on bed rest, to the day we delivered, I never once feared for me or my son’s safety. Everyone, from the nurses, physicians, environmental services and food services staff were wonderful. My husband and I often talk about those magical three weeks we spent there. We felt safe, loved and cared for. I speak of my birth story with such love and appreciation for the Family Center care teams. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience — it remains the most amazing time in my life, welcoming my son. He is now almost 18 months old and the most incredible gift!”
