West Florida Division hospitals nationally recognized for stroke care

All 15 Hospitals Receive Get With The Guidelines Recognition

April 02, 2024

Tampa, FL  - HCA Healthcare West Florida Division hospitals received Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke quality achievement awards for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. The awards were presented by The American Heart Association at the 2024 Quality Achievement Awards Dinner on February 8.

“Once again all 15 of our hospitals are being recognized for their outstanding work in providing our patients and the communities we serve with the highest level of stroke care,” said HCA Healthcare West Florida Division President Jyric Sims. “As designated stroke centers, our hospitals are staffed, equipped and ready to care for stroke patients using the latest recommended treatment guidelines.”

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

“When every second counts, aligning patient care with the latest evidence based treatment guidelines and processes ensures optimal outcomes for our stroke patients,” explained the Division’s Chief Medical Officer Gus Sepulveda, MD, MPH, FACP. “Get With The Guidelines provides expertise that hospitals nationwide can use to improve stroke care.”

Get With The Guidelines - Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
