Inverness, FL – HCA Florida Citrus Hospital recently announced the launch of its Therapy Dog Program, aimed at providing additional support and comfort to patients during their hospital stay. With the introduction of trained therapy dogs as volunteers within the hospital, patients now have access to the therapeutic benefits of canine companionship.

Research has shown that interaction with therapy dogs can reduce stress, anxiety, and pain levels, while also providing emotional support and improving overall wellbeing.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kimberly Salazar emphasized the importance of the program for patient health and healing, saying, "As medical professionals, we recognize the profound impact that emotional wellbeing can have on physical recovery. Therapy dogs have been shown to boost morale, reduce feelings of isolation, and even lower blood pressure, contributing to a more positive healing environment."

The Therapy Dog Program will involve specially trained dogs making visits to select patient units as well as designated areas within the hospital where patients and staff can interact with the dogs. Volunteer handlers will accompany the therapy dogs to ensure safe and appropriate interactions.
