Lung cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers, and is highly treatable. It can be treated through surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This cancer is strongly linked to a history of smoking, so you should seek lung cancer screening to determine your risk of developing this disease.

In its early stages, lung cancer does not show symptoms, but when it does in the later stages, it can be harder to treat. This is why screening tests are key in diagnosing lung cancer early.

Lung cancer screening

HCA Florida North Florida Invision Imaging Center offers low-dose CT lung screening, which allows clinicians to take a detailed picture of your lungs to help detect potential lung cancers.

Incidental lung nodule program

To help with early detection, if you visit our emergency room (ER) and undergo a CT scan that includes images of the lungs, your scan is examined for lung nodules. If a lung nodule is detected, you are referred to our lung nurse coordinator.

Your primary care physician receives a CT scan report with the recommended follow-up care. The recommendations are based on the 2017 Fleischner Society guidelines for incidental pulmonary nodules.

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy

HCA Florida North Florida Hospital offers the minimally invasive robotic bronchoscopy procedure, a new technology that improves the accuracy and precision of lung nodule biopsies. This enables pulmonologists and surgeons to diagnose lung cancer earlier than ever.

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy allows the care team to more reliably diagnose lung nodules and make a diagnosis of lung cancer earlier, thus improving patient outcomes. The robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system features an ultra-thin, easily maneuverable catheter that can move 180 degrees in all directions, allowing physicians to navigate through small and winding airways to reach nodules in any airway segment within the lung. The system features a computer-assisted navigation component to help guide the catheter to the nodule, similar to a GPS system in a car. The system’s flexible biopsy needle can also pass through very tight bends via the catheter to collect tissue in the peripheral lung. These components enable a more precise and accurate biopsy and a better experience for patients.
