St. Petersburg, Fla. — Mrs. Edmonson and Mrs. Newsome's third-grade classroom at Northshore Elementary buzzed with excitement during a visit from Dr. Read, an HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital physician. The visit, held in honor of National Reading Month, unfolded as a day of storytelling, discovery and a shared love for books. Dr. Read, joined by members of the St. Petersburg Hospital team, brought not only his medical expertise but also a treasure trove of books donated to the students. This unforgettable event offered valuable insights into healthcare while fostering a passion for reading and community spirit.

Dr. Grant Read, M.D.

Dr. Read captivated the students with an engaging talk about what doctors do. He shared fascinating insights into the world of medicine while encouraging the children to reflect on their own experiences with doctors and hospitals. From minor checkups to more complex visits, the students eagerly shared their stories. "Wow! You all have so many incredible stories about your experiences with doctors," Dr. Read responded warmly. "Sometimes going to the doctor can be tough, but it's amazing to see how brave and thoughtful you all are!"

In honor of National Reading Month, Dr. Read brought with him books donated by the doctors, nurses and hospital staff. The students were thrilled to explore their classroom’s new collection, which included beloved titles like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dory Fantasmagory and Harriet of Harlem. As they sifted through the books, their excitement filled the room, with many students immediately diving into their favorites at their desks.

Inspiring giving among students

Among the new titles were some books more suited for younger readers. "We can take these to the preschool classes and donate them to the preschool students and read to them!" one student exclaimed with enthusiasm. Mrs. Newsome encouraged their generosity, saying, "We all read at different levels, and it's wonderful to see everyone happy to share any books the class agrees would be better for our younger friends in preschool." Their willingness to share reflected the spirit of community and kindness fostered throughout the visit.

Dr. Read also took time to answer the students' medical questions, listening attentively as they described their experiences and curiosity about healthcare. "The talk with Dr. Read really was the highlight of our classroom’s week," Mrs. Edmonson shared. "The students have been non-stop reading our new books and hope to see Dr. Read again for the Great American Teach-In in November. He was fantastic with our students. He really listened to their stories and answered all their questions. They loved talking with him!"

One student expressed their gratitude, saying, "I loved talking to Dr. Read and telling him about the time I had to go to the hospital. I hope I get to visit Dr. Read if I ever have to go back."

Through storytelling, generosity and meaningful conversations, Dr. Read made National Reading Month unforgettable for these young Northshore Elementary learners. His visit not only brought joy and excitement to the classroom but also inspired a love for learning, reading and helping others. This day was one to remember—and one that will continue to resonate long after the books have been read and shared.
