HCA Florida Citrus Hospital raises awareness for women's heart health during American Heart Month
Dr. Ernesto Jimenez Encourages Women to Prioritize Their Heart Health
Inverness, FL – Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, yet many women remain unaware of their personal risk. During American Heart Month, HCA Florida Citrus Hospital is emphasizing the importance of women’s heart health and the steps they can take to protect their hearts.
“Heart disease doesn’t just affect men—it’s a serious health concern for women as well,” says Dr. Ernesto Jimenez, cardiovascular surgeon at HCA Florida Citrus Hospital. “The symptoms of heart disease and heart attacks can be different in women, which is why education and awareness are critical.”
Unique Heart Attack Symptoms in Women
While chest pain is the most common sign of a heart attack, women are more likely to experience atypical symptoms, including:
- Shortness of breath – Even without chest discomfort
- Nausea or vomiting
- Unusual fatigue – Feeling exhausted for no clear reason
- Pain in the back, jaw, or stomach
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
“These symptoms are often mistaken for stress, indigestion, or the flu,” says Jimenez. “That’s why women should listen to their bodies and seek medical attention if something feels off.”
Mitral Valve Prolapse: A Common Heart Condition in Women
One heart condition that primarily affects women is mitral valve prolapse, a disorder in which the valve between the left heart chambers does not close properly. “Most cases of mitral valve prolapse are benign and do not cause serious health issues,” says Jimenez. “However, in a small percentage of women, it can progress and lead to heart failure.” Symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or palpitations may indicate the need for further evaluation. Dr. Jimenez emphasizes that mitral valve prolapse can be easily diagnosed with an echocardiogram, allowing for early detection and management.
Reducing the Risk of Heart Disease
HCA Florida Citrus Hospital encourages women to take control of their heart health with these key steps:
- Know Your Numbers – Regularly check blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels with your primary care provider.
- Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet – Focus on whole foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats while reducing processed foods.
- Stay Active – Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
- Manage Stress – Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can help protect the heart.
- Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol – These habits increase heart disease risk.
Recognizing the Importance of Expert Cardiac Care
When heart concerns arise, having access to specialized care is essential. HCA Florida Citrus Hospital offers advanced cardiac treatments, emergency care, and surgical expertise to support patients when they need it most.
“Women should be proactive about their heart health and seek care if they experience symptoms or have concerns,” says Jimenez. “Understanding your risk factors and making heart-healthy choices can make a significant difference in long-term wellbeing.”
