It’s a new year and you’re trying to get back to your routine after a whirlwind of holiday activities – but instead of feeling energized, you feel drained. Or maybe the holiday season was a tough one due to loss, or distance – whether physical or emotional – from family and friends.

Post-holiday blues look different to different people, says Dr. Manjula Kottapalli, board certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist with HCA Florida Behavioral Health Specialists, affiliated with HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. This emotional dip can stem from many factors including the end of holiday excitement, financial stress, or missing loved ones.

“Feelings of emptiness and sadness after the rush of holiday activities is not unusual,” Dr. Kottapalli said. “Reestablishing routines for both adult and children can help to regain a sense of stability. Consistent mealtimes and sleep schedules are important for mental health all year long, especially when transitioning out of a hectic holiday season.”

Dr. Kottapalli adds it’s important to recognize such feelings are usually temporary, manageable and completely normal.

“Give yourself permission to feel the way you do,” Dr. Kottapalli said. “Then give yourself permission to focus on moving ahead, perhaps with a new goal or new activities.”

Having something to look forward to can help with motivation. Rather than getting caught up in New Year’s resolutions, consider smaller, attainable goals. Suggestions include learning a new skill, focusing on fitness, planning a trip or joining a new club. Setting aside some time to get outside each day, or tidy up and organize your space can also help with mental clarity and overall mood.

If you can’t seem to shake the negative feelings, ask for help. Speaking with a therapist or counselor can help you move past the holiday blues and look forward to the year ahead. For more information, visit this link or call HCA Florida Healthcare’s Consult-A-Nurse® helpline at (844) 706-8773.
