Panama City, Fla. — Global awareness latch-on days are celebrated annually to promote the healthy aspects of breastfeeding.

HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital hosts a mommy & me support group called Breast Friends, twice a month and tied in the global message on Friday.

The group helps support local mothers who may need assistance with raising their babies.

Officials say breastfeeding is healthier for the baby and mother. It reduces the risk of health complications for both and creates a special bond for the baby and mom.

“In the hospital setting, our goal is to help them get started and understand what to expect, but they’re never able to be prepared for what’s going to happen long term so having that support group is a way for us to help moms have a place to come, ask questions and get the support they need once they’ve left the hospital,” lactation consultant Adrianne Tomasiewicz said.

The women also heard from a local dentist about lip and tongue restrictions, and overall child dental care.
