South Tampa Hospital recognizes Michelle Nutting, RN, for showing up
Hospital caregiver rescues a fellow runner in trouble in a 10k race.
Tampa, FL - Michelle Nutting, RN at HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital, was recently recognized for coming to the aid of a gentleman who was participating in the annual SKYWAY 10K, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Michelle and her twin sister participated in the SKYWAY 10K race which took place on March 12. Established in 2017, the SKYWAY 10K has raised more than $2.6 million for the Armed Forces Families Foundation, contributing 100% of its profits to the mission of funding infrastructure projects that support military families throughout the United States.
“During the race, another runner collapsed and passed out in front of my sister and I,” stated Michelle. “We immediately rushed over to help him by checking his pulse and respirations. He was breathing on his own and said he had no chest pain or shortness of breath. I took the next step to cool him down and place cold water on key areas until EMS was contacted.” Michelle was able to contact the gentleman’s sister who was also participating in the race, and ran to the finish line to find her. In spite of the large crowd present at the finish line, Michelle located his sister and was able to reunite her with her brother.
“This is a great example of our caregivers making a difference not only every day at work in the hospital, but also in our community,” said Sonia Wellman, CEO of South Tampa Hospital. “It also underscores the importance for all of us to know how to respond in an emergency situation.”
