After cancer treatments, some patients have wounds that are not visible on the outside, this therapy is improving life for area residents.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helping cancer patients heal
88-year-old Kenneth Bingle was successfully treated for colon and prostate cancer, but still had lingering health issues. His cancer treatments left him with internal wounds, that he couldn’t see, but impacted his health. His urologist recommended hyperbaric oxygen therapy or HBOT at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center.
Five days a week, two hours a day, Mr. Bingle spent time in an HBO chamber. The chamber has pure oxygen which helps stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, which helps with healing. Now the retired letter carrier and U.S. Air Force veteran is healed inside and out and feeling the best he has in years. “I feel great, lots of energy,” said Bingle.
“This is one of the advanced approaches we use for people with conditions like diabetic wounds, soft tissue damage from radiation, bone infections, and preparation and preservation of compromised skin grafts. HBOT is a safe, adjunct therapy that expedites and improves healing and really enhances the quality of life for our patients,” said Steven Silverman, M.D., medical director for the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center.
When asked if he would recommend the treatment to others, Mr. Bingle agreed, it was worth the time he spent in the chamber and with the treatment team. “Go for it, I would recommend this in a heartbeat,” he said.
