Miguel Janssen
Miguel Janssen recently received specialized treatment for a hemifacial spasm.
“I feel blessed that he operated on me. He is such a legend,” says Miguel Janssen of the Netherlands.
Miguel recently met with Dr. Michael Horowitz, board certified neurosurgeon of Orange Park, to receive treatment for a hemifacial spasm, a rare but serious nervous system condition in which the muscles of the face involuntarily twitch. “I have had a good overall experience. All of the staff gave me a very warm welcome.”
Miguel was referred to Dr. Horowitz by his specialist in the Netherlands, nearly 5,000 miles away, for Dr. Horowitz’s unique and expert approach to treating rare neurological disorders and cerebrovascular conditions. Dr. Horowitz is one of a handful of doctors to provide treatment for these rare conditions in the country and has published over 150 peer reviewed journal articles and over 45 book chapters. When Miguel was diagnosed with such a rare condition, he just knew that Orange Park was the place to go.
Signs and symptoms of a hemifacial spasm can vary by patient, but most common symptoms can include involuntary, frequent contractions or spasms of the muscles on one side of the face. Most often, a hemifacial spasm is caused by a blood vessel causing pressure or pulsing on the facial nerve at the place where it exits the brainstem. The condition can cause discomfort if left untreated.
Miguel is thankful for the specialized treatment he received at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital and is happy to return to his normal life-thousands of miles away. “I live abroad and still I can ask him for advice,” says Miguel. “My experience is that Orange Park hospital is a well-organized facility with a professional staff”.
