From an early age, Kayla Carr would research all of her parents' and grandparents’ medications they kept in their cabinets and attempt to educate them on her findings. Her future in healthcare was unfolding during those moments in Niceville, Florida.
Carr’s academic pursuits took her to Florida State University (FSU), where she dove into the intricacies of biochemistry. The chemistry-heavy curriculum at FSU deepened her interest in the pharmacy field. “I yearned for a path that allowed me to bridge the gap between my love for chemistry and my desire to educate others. During a year of shadowing various healthcare providers — physicians, surgeons, veterinarians, and pharmacists — I found my calling,” said Kayla Carr, now a pharmacist at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital.
After graduating from FSU, Carr began a new chapter at the University of Florida – College of Pharmacy. After semesters of rigorous coursework and hands-on experiences, she felt ready for a fulfilling career in the pharmacy field.
“As my journey unfolded, I found myself drawn to the hospital setting during my rotations. It was in the emerald coast of Florida that I discovered HCA Fort Walton-Destin Hospital,” said Carr. “The close-knit family atmosphere within the pharmacy department resonated with me, and I felt a sense of belonging. This realization inspired me to apply for the residency program at the hospital where I was born.”
Returning to HCA Fort Walton-Destin Hospital as a resident felt like destiny to Carr; the familiar surroundings and the warmth of the community embraced her once again. Becoming the hospital's first pharmacy resident was a homecoming — the significance of the moment was not lost.
Now, as a pharmacist, Carr continues to navigate the challenges and triumphs of her role, reminded that life has a way of coming full circle. Born in the HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, she now contributes to its legacy. “This hospital holds not just my beginnings but also the promise of a fulfilling future as I continue to serve and care for the community I proudly call home,” said Carr.
