Summer ER Tips
Make All of Your Summer Memories Safe Ones
Below are some tips to keep you safe and healthy this summer
Ban the (sun)burn
- Avoid direct exposure between 10:00am and 3:00pm, when sun is most intense.
- Choose a waterproof sunscreen with a minimum 30 SPF.
- Use a higher SPF sunscreen in water, high humidity or high elevation.
- Apply sunscreen a half hour before sun exposure, to allow ingredients to fully bind to the skin.
- Use at least an ounce of sunscreen per application.
- Apply sunscreen on all areas, before putting on a swimsuit for further protection, and to help avoid painful tan lines. Don’t forget areas like ears and feet.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, immediately after swimming, toweling off or perspiring.
Practice fire safety when firing up the grill
- Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
- Never use a grill inside.
- Never leave a lit grill unattended.
- Use grill in an open area, away from overhanging roofs, deck railings and branches.
- Let coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
- Never move a hot grill.
Watch out for heatstroke
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
- Schedule outdoor activity to cooler times of the day.
- Take frequent indoor breaks to cool off.
- Drink extra fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, which are dehydrating.
