Karlis is an experienced patient advocate and former educator bringing enthusiasm and joy to every patient and colleague he encounters.
Karlis Mims never dreamed of working in the medical field. When the pre-kindergarten teacher of five years needed a summer job, he found himself serving food to patients and staff at Gulf Coast Hospital’s cafeteria. His friendliness and bubbly personality made a big impression on everyone he encountered, and his supervisor took notice, eventually landing him a full-time job as Patient Liaison Leader.
“This role gives me the chance to make a difference in someone’s life every day,” said Karlis. “Being in a hospital can be a scary and isolating experience, especially for our local retirees who may not have family close by. When I meet a patient, it’s my job to find out what will make their hospital stay better. Sometimes the simplest things, like conversation or a banana popsicle, make all the difference.”
Karlis attributes his success as a patient advocate to his background in education. He welcomes new patients and colleagues with the same high energy and enthusiasm he used in his classroom, bringing a smile to every face. He also draws on his never-ending patience and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. A true “people person,” he gets to the heart of every patient’s personal story, and by getting to know his patients, he can ensure the best hospital experience possible.
“The people are truly the best part of this job,” said Karlis. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a doctor, nurse or director, everyone is here for one reason — the patient. We’re not just a hospital, we’re a family. When a patient comes through our doors, I have the honor of welcoming them into our fold. There’s no greater purpose than that.”
