Pharmacy residency
Pharmacy residency helps develop the knowledge of clinical pharmacists and prepares them for active involvement within designated healthcare teams.
About the PGY1 Residency Experience
Our American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited PGY1 program builds on Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists. The program is geared towards pharmacists who are eligible for board certification; those who are eligible for postgraduate year-two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training; and those who are looking to assume positions as patient care clinicians. PGY1 also prepares graduates to serve as adjunct faculty for a college of pharmacy with an optional teaching certificate program.
Program overview
During PGY1, residents become active members of the healthcare team with opportunities to influence medication use and safety practices. Residents have opportunities to be involved with formulary management, policy development, antimicrobial stewardship, teaching pharmacy students, as well as presenting at both the annual ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Florida Residency Conference.
Our supportive, close-knit workplace fosters a friendly, caring, patient-centered environment that includes one-on-one daily interactions with preceptors and medical staff. Each resident has their own personal desk in a spacious office, complete with a personal laptop with remote access to all necessary clinical tools. The program offers flexibility, while providing a strong foundation for all areas of pharmacy practice.
It is the overall goal of PGY1 pharmacy residency to provide the following outcomes to all residents:
- Awareness and initiative to lead medication safety efforts throughout the health system
- Confidence to work autonomously as a clinical pharmacist and collaborate in interdisciplinary groups
- Competence to provide education to other healthcare professionals in various settings
- Enhanced professionalism and marketable job skills to further a career in clinical pharmacy practice
- Leadership skills to work within any healthcare system

Residency Program Director
Dr. Melissa Padgett earned her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2014 from Belmont University College of Pharmacy in Nashville, TN. After receiving her PharmD, she completed a post-doctoral PGY1 pharmacy residency at HCA Florida West Hospital in June of 2015. From there, she stayed on as a full-time clinical pharmacist involved in precepting residents. In order to actively pursue antimicrobial stewardship activities, Dr. Padgett became a board-certified infectious diseases pharmacist (BCIDP) and earned Making a Difference in Infectious Diseases (MAD-ID) certification from the Advanced Antimicrobial Stewardship Training Program provided by MAD-ID and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). Dr. Padgett has been a prominent member of the Antimicrobial Management Program here at the hospital and in 2018 she served on HCA Healthcare’s Clinical Pharmacy Advisory Board. After training for several years, she became the PGY1 Residency Program Director in March 2019 while continuing to provide patient care as a clinical pharmacist.
