Inpatient physical rehabilitation

Inpatient physical rehabilitation provides intense, daily treatment and physician services for people who need 24-hour help while they recover from surgery or conditions such as strokes.

At HCA Florida JFK, our rehabilitation specialists work with you to provide the confidence and ability to return to your everyday activities after a traumatic injury or illness.

At our state-of-the-art, 42-bed Physical Rehabilitation Center, we offer a range of therapies to create a personalized treatment plan that is unique to your health needs. Our multidisciplinary team encourages family support as we restore your health to the highest level of independence possible.

Our rehabilitation treatments and services

Our extensive inpatient rehabilitation program includes hands-on practice that will help you regain mobility, flexibility and cognitive abilities.

Physical therapy services

We support your physical recovery after illness, injury or surgery with attentive, individualized care options. Our physical therapists will work with you to improve your balance and coordination and build strength. We also teach youhow to use a walker or cane, if needed (gait training) and develop transfer techniques.

Occupational therapy services

Occupational therapy supports your physical therapy goals by applying them to activities of daily life. Our occupational therapists maximize your independence by practicing daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking and performing household activities. We work with you to improve your strength and coordination, develop fine motor skills and learn transfer techniques.

Rehabilitation nurse care

A specially trained rehabilitation nurse helps support your overall healing process, helping you learn more about medication and prescriptions, skin care, nutrition, safety concerns. We strive to educate you and your family so they can help you make progress when you return home.

Speech and language therapy

Our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help you regain verbal communication skills as well as memory and swallowing skills. We focus on cognitive skills, speaking, , and activities of daily living involving home tasks.

Clinical support services

While in the rehabilitation program, you will have access to additional medical services, including access to our pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, lab services, wound care, dialysis and emergency care. These on-site services can be provided to our patients within a few hours of a physician’s order and critical results are called to the nurses and physicians directly. Supportive services are provided as clinically indicated and will be coordinated by the rehabilitation team.

Family education and training

Family involvement is critical to achieving a successful outcome. We highly encourage your family to participate in program events such as training sessions and recreational activities. We encourage open communication between family members and our team and ask for feedback as you complete our rehabilitation program. Family support ensures you will make consistent progress as you transition back home. We schedule a family training session prior to discharge.

Admission criteria

To be admitted to our program, you must meet basic criteria, including having medical and functional needs consistent with an intense inpatient rehabilitation program. You can be referred to our program from a variety of sources, including:

  • Assisted living facilities
  • Emergency rooms
  • Home
  • Hospitals
  • Long-term acute care facilities
  • Skilled nursing facilities

We base admission on a comprehensive evaluation of your health and needs, including the need for an intensive level of constant care.
