Bone density testing and osteoporosis care
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes your bones to become weak, which can increase your risk of breaking or fracturing a bone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), osteoporosis is more common in women than men, affecting about 25 percent of women 65 years old and older.
Breaking a bone can be a painful and difficult recovery at any age, but it can be especially serious as you get older. That's why we offer bone density testing to detect osteoporosis in its earliest stages. When diagnosed early, we can help create a care plan to manage the disease and minimize your chances of fracturing your bones.
Risk factors for osteoporosis
Risk factors that increase your likelihood of developing osteoporosis include:
- Being a smoker
- Drinking too much alcohol
- Eating a poor diet
- Having a family history of osteoporosis and/or broken bones
- Having a history of broken bones
- Having a small frame and/or thin build
- Having certain diseases and conditions, such as anorexia nervosa, rheumatoid arthritis or gastrointestinal diseases
- Having low hormone levels
- Leading an inactive lifestyle
- Taking certain medications
