Hospital reaches milestone with minimally invasive procedure to treat carotid artery disease
Surgical team achieves significant accomplishment with 100 TCAR procedures.
HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital recently marked a significant milestone in cardiovascular care. The surgical team celebrated with surgeon Issam Halaby, MD FACS as he performed his 100th TransCarotid Artery Revascularization or TCAR procedure. TCAR is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat carotid artery disease and help prevent strokes. “This is less invasive for the patient, there is less of a risk of stroke, and it allows us to reach lesions we would not be able to reach surgically,” said Dr. Halaby.
Carotid artery disease is a form of atherosclerosis, or a build-up of plaque, in the two main arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. In a TCAR procedure, blood flow is temporarily reversed so that any plaque that may break off is diverted away from the brain, preventing a stroke. A stent is then placed inside the artery to stabilize the plaque, minimizing the risk of a future stroke.
HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital offers patients minimally invasive options such as TCAR to prevent future strokes, help with a faster recovery time, and to spend less time in the hospital.
