Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy can lead to early diagnosis

Tampa, FL — HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital is now offering patients a minimally-invasive option for lung biopsy. The robotic-assisted bronchoscopy enables physicians to reach nodules far into the lung with greater accuracy to determine if a lung nodule or mass is cancerous.

When diagnosed at the earliest stage, lung cancer survival rates can improve dramatically. With this latest innovation in lung biopsy, physicians are able to obtain tissue samples that provide a definitive diagnosis, enabling patients to avoid subsequent biopsies.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this minimally-invasive technology as an option to our patients,” said Dr. Rafael Martinez, a pulmonologist on the medical staff at South Tampa Hospital. “This technology allows us to reach areas in the lung that were not accessible before, allowing patients to receive an earlier definitive diagnosis and treatment plan, if needed.”

The new lung biopsy technology represents another advancement in minimally invasive technology to support streamlined diagnosis and treatment for patients.
