Juanita has been through a lot. But when you meet her she offers a warm smile and has an air of positivity about her. Juanita is no stranger to hospitals and the medical community. After being involved in a terrible car accident when she was 18 years old, she has endured many spine surgeries and she recognizes quality care when she receives it.
More than a month ago, Juanita arrived at our ER, unable to move, and in the weakest state she's ever been in. She was rushed to the ER by ambulance after she was unable to lift her head or even to swallow after several weeks of deterioration. Juanita was admitted to HCA Florida Capital Hospital, where many tests were performed to determine what was causing the paralysis and her weakened state. After inconclusive test results, she was admitted to the HCA Florida Capital Hospital inpatient rehabilitation center.
Juanita had started to give up hope. Barely able to swallow, much less walk, the rehabilitation team, and Juanita had a long road ahead of them. With tears in her eyes, she said, "I felt defeated and had given up, but there was such coordination with the team. They treated all of me - my physical and emotional health. I felt like I was their sister in the way that they cared and supported me. They rejoiced in my accomplishments. They always worked as a team and I was always a part of the decisions made about my treatment plan. Within time, I was able to stand and walk again with assistance, feed myself and I have gained the strength needed to go home." The team has also assisted Juanita in coordinating follow-up specialty care to continue to search for answers in her health journey.
"I could not have received better care anywhere else and I am so grateful for everyone that took care of me."
